Rare Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO / JOHNSTOWN, PA," circa 1870, tapered jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated on the front and back with brushed cobalt swags. Handle terminals decorated with cobalt flowers, and are underscored by six graduated cobalt dashes. An unusually large example of Johnstown, PA stoneware. 5 1/2" crack from rim. Some tight crazing to surface on underside, which does not extend through to interior, and may have occurred in the firing. H 15 1/2".
