Very Rare Double-Handled Stoneware Jug, attributed to Rockbridge County, VA, mid 19th century, finely-potted, large-sized jug with tall spout and open strap handles, decorated with cobalt at the handle terminals. Jug measures approximately five gallons. Aspects of the form and color of the clay suggest this jug was made in Rockbridge County, VA. Exceptional form. 7/8" flake to shoulder. Small lines to shoulder. Large section of spout restored on one side. Chipping and piece missing from restoration. Additional minor chip to spout. Chip and horizontal crack in one handle. Chipping to base. 2" and 1 1/2" hairlines at base. Several short in-the-firing lines to shoulder. H 20 1/2".
