Extremely Rare and Important Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "JOHN BURGER / ROCHESTER," circa 1860, large-sized ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, lavishly-decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a deer with large antlers and spotted body, standing between two trees on a heavily-detailed lawn. This bold and artistically-rendered design ranks among the very best American stoneware deer decorations known. The grand size of the jar adds to the impact of the design on the viewer. A masterpiece of New York State stoneware. 11" spidering crack extending from underneath one handle to bottom left portion of decoration. 9" spidering crack in reverse of jar.
