Extremely Rare "United States Mail" Redware Presentation Flask, Dated 1848, with flattened sides and short spout, the surface covered in a reddish-brown lead and manganese glaze, featuring the following incised inscriptions. One side reads, "F A / Nicholas Homer /May 18th 1848 / United States / Mail". Reverse reads, "NH / 1848 / USM". Underside dated "1848". An exceptional flask, presumably made for a mid-19th century postman named Nicholas Homer. Possibly the only known example of American redware made for a member of the United States Postal Service. Provenance: Recently found in New England. Excellent condition with small spots of glaze to exterior of spout and additional spots of glaze wear to interior of spout. H 6 1/2".
