Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES.UTICA," New York State origin, circa 1865, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed cobalt bird with fan-shaped tail, depicted in a "running" stance atop a stylized branch. Provenance: Lynn White Collection, Readfield, ME. Numerous small chips on interior of rim. Heavy chipping to one handle. Chip and line in opposite handle. Wide crack extending from rim on reverse, becoming thinner and extending onto underside, with related chip on underside. Some hairlines and faint lines in surface. Spots of fry to cobalt. H 10 3/8".
