Stoneware Face Jug, Incised "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA, 20th century, one-gallon ovoid jug with applied facial features, including eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Eyes and teeth are composed of kaolin. Face has incised eyelashes, as well as bulged chin, cheeks, and areas under the eyes, giving the figure a heavy-set appearance. The frown and position of its eyes produce a distraught appearance. Surface covered in a streaky olive-colored alkaline glaze. Incised "83 / Lanier Meaders" on underside. Provenance: Purchased directly from Meaders at a Smithsonian Craft Show in the early 1980’s. Near mint condition with two minor lines in underside, which probably occurred in the firing.
