Outstanding Six-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Brushwork, Ohio origin, circa 1870, ovoid jar with rounded rim and open strap handles, profusely decorated with several brushed cobalt "tornadoes" and carrot-shaped leaves or blossoms. Brushed cobalt "6" at shoulder. Impressed with a large 6 below the rim on reverse. An excellent example of a popular Ohio design. 4 1/4" hairline at base on front, extending 1 1/4" onto underside. Base chip on reverse with 3 3/4" horizontal hairline extending from it. An additional hairline extends from this chip 5 1/4" onto underside. H 17 1/2".
