Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt and Manganese Decoration, attributed to the Bell Pottery, Strasburg, VA, circa 1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated with opposin6g manganese swags on the front and back, interspersed with brushed cobalt swags. Desirable size and unusual two-color decoration. Provenance: Descended in the family of Betty Cooley, the wife of potter, Richard Franklin "Polk" Bell. 3 1/2" thin crack from rim. Y-shaped crack on underside, continuing partway up wall of jar in three places. Rim chips, the largest of which is glazed over. Some in-the-firing blistering to surface. H 6 1/4".
