Ovoid Stoneware Jar with Abstract Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "JACOB CAIRE / POKEEPSIE, N Y," circa 1840, highly ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt symbol accented with spots and curving trails. Unusual decoration and good form. Several rim chips. Chips to one handle and small flake below same handle. 1 1/2" crack and 1 1/2" inverted Y-shaped hairline in rim. 2 1/4" crack on underside, extending 3 3/4" up reverse of jar. 1" in-the-firing T-shaped hairline on underside. 1/2" minor line at base on front. H 10 1/2".
