Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Folky Bird and Floral Decorations, Stamped "J. REILEY & CO. / LANSINGBURGH," circa 1855-1858, cylindrical jug with sloped shoulder, semi-rounded spout, and applied handle, decorated with a large slip-trailed cobalt design of a folky standing bird flanked by two large flowers. Bird features a solid blue head, dotted wing, fan-shaped tail produced from numerous dashes, and a body embellished with very large dots of cobalt. Bird is underscored by curling trails and graduated horizontal trails of cobalt. Flowers to the left and right are accented with dots and curling trails. Reiley stoneware is scarce, particularly with designs of this quality. An outstanding decoration with great folk art appeal. Inverted 4 3/4" Y-shaped line on side of jug. 1 1/4" faint line in spout on reverse, which likely occurred during the firing. Fry to cobalt. H 14 1/2".
