Rare Shenandoah Valley Glazed Redware Flowerpot, Stamped "BACHER & KERN / WINCHESTER, VA," circa 1880, tapered pot with semi-squared rim and tooled shoulder, the surface coated in cream-colored slip, decorated with manganese, and covered in a clear lead glaze. Attractive cream and brown mottled surface with flecks of green copper slip. This rare maker's mark was used during the brief partnership of potters Anthony Bacher and Adam Kern in the year 1882 (Comstock, p 363). Rim chip. Glaze wear to rim. Light glaze wear to incised lines at shoulder. Some small spots of glaze missing here and there. H 7 1/2".
