One-Gallon John Hay Stoneware Commemorative Jug, New York State origin, circa 1865-1880, decorated with the slip-trailed cobalt inscription "John Hay / N.Y.," which likely refers to John Milton Hay, President Lincoln's secretary and assistant. Hay (1838-1905) was present when Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theater in Washington, and later became Secretary of State under McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Serving as a diplomat, he was involved in the creation of over fifty treaties. Surface lines in handle. Spout nicks. H 11 3/8".
