Two-Gallon Stoneware John Hay Commemorative Jug, New York State origin, circa 1865, decorated with the words "JOHN HAY N.Y." within a slip-trailed cobalt banner accented with cobalt slashes. John Hay was likely John Milton Hay, President Lincoln"s secretary and assistant. Hay (1838-1905) was present when Lincoln was shot at Ford"s Theater in Washington, and later became Secretary of State under McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Serving as a diplomat, he was involved in the creation of over fifty treaties. Inverted Y-shaped crack extending 13" down from spout. Another inverted Y-shaped crack from spout extending onto shoulder area. Spout chips. H 14 1/4".
