Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Rooster Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a long-tailed rooster, fence, and pine tree. An unusual and highly-prized Norton design. Restoration to sections of surface and some of rim, with some very minor flecks of touch-up to some of decoration. 2" vertical hairline at base, continuing onto underside. H 11".
