Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Bird on Stump Decoration, Stamped "A.B. WHEELER & CO., / 69 Broad Street / BOSTON, MASS.," circa 1875, straight-sided jug with rounded shoulder, tooled spout, and applied handle, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a large bird with long tail and raised wings, perched on a stump surrounded by various shrubs and grasses. This outstanding and artistically-rendered design covers much of the jug's front. Small spout chips, some of which occurred in the making. 3/4" in-the-firing touch mark on reverse of jug. Otherwise mint condition. H 13 1/2".
