Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Rooster Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, straight-sided jug with rounded shoulder, thick semi-squared spout, and applied handle, decorated with a large slip-trailed cobalt rooster scene. Rooster depicted with turned head, long arching tail feathers, and spotted breast, standing on a lawn with shrubs to the right and a fence in the foreground. A highly desirable Norton design, more commonly found on a straight-sided crock form. Drilled hole in underside for use as a lamp. Spout chips. Small stone ping on reverse. H 14 3/4".
