Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Rooster Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with rounded shoulder and semi-squared spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a rooster with turned head and elaborate tail, perched on a shrubbed hill with fence in the foreground. A highly desirable and lesser-seen Norton design, more commonly found on a jar form. Drilled hole in underside for use as a lamp. Spout chips. A few very minor in-the-firing pings to surface. A 4 1/2" line to right of decoration. Minor in-the-firing surface fissures to upper handle terminal. H 14 3/4".
