Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1850, straight-sided jug with sloping shoulder, squared spout, and ribbed handle, decorated with an artistic slip-trailed design of a pheasant perched on the branch of a tree. Pheasant depicted with crest, whattle, dotted breast and neck, and long tail. Tree accented with shaded edge, surrounded by shrubs. A fine example of Norton stoneware with excellent color. Near mint condition with a tiny rim nick and in-the-firing contact point by branch at left. H 15 1/4".
