Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Advertising Jug with Elaborate Deer Scene, Stamped "P. WHITIN & SONS / WHITINSVILLE, MASS," attributed to J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT, circa 1855, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt scene featuring a standing stag with turned head and spotted body. In the background, on a hill to the left, stands a pine tree surrounded by shrubs, and on a hill to the right, a length of fence. Style of design is consistent with the work of the Nortons of Bennington, VT. Desirable small size, measuring only one gallon. Deer designs are typically found on larger-sized pieces. Restored handle. Repair to spout. Three tiny spout nicks. Some paint, possibly related to a repair, around handle on reverse body of jug. A few base chips. Small stone ping at base on front. H 11 1/2".
