Rare and Important Early New Jersey Stoneware Jar with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "WARNE & LETTS 1806 / S. AMBOY. N. JERSY," circa 1806, straight-sided jar with squared rim and heavy shoulder incising, stamped with two scallop-edged, cobalt-filled crescents below the maker"s mark of Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts. The impressed "1806" on this jar represents Warne and Letts" first year of production together, their partnership having lasted from 1806 to 1813. Stoneware bearing this South Amboy maker"s mark is highly prized. Rim chip and base chip. Crack in underside, with spider line extending up from base of jar on front, right side, and reverse. Height 9".
