Very Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug with Double Row of Rock Teeth, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA, circa 1970, squat-shaped jug with flared spout, decorated with hand-modeled and applied facial features including broad ears, round kaolin eyes with black-slip pupils, nose lacking nostrils, and open mouth fitted with two rows of rock teeth, the surface covered in a mottled reddish-brown to blackish-brown alkaline glaze. Underside incised with Lanier Meaders signature. This jug displays a number of characteristics that place it at a desirable, earlier period of manufacture for Meaders, circa 1970. These details include its highly unusual double row of rock teeth (numbering fifteen teeth total), its reductive features, flattened face, reddish-brown glaze, and ball-shaped, glazed eyes. Attesting to the jug's rarity, it is the first Lanier Meaders example featuring a double row of rock teeth that we have offered. Provenance: Recently surfaced in the Southeastern U.S. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 8 3/4".
