Very Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "BELL," Peter, Samuel, and/or Solomon Bell, Winchester, VA, circa 1840, ovoid form with flaring collar and extruded lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a diagonal stem bearing four tulips of varying sizes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed below one handle with very faint, "BELL," maker's mark below a one-and-a-half-gallon capacity mark. The maker's mark on this jar appears to be in the same font and size as Samuel Bell's early "S. BELL" stoneware mark, but lacks the "S." We have only seen a small number of pieces bearing this mark variant. Three chips to one handle. A 1 1/4" in-the-firing flake to top of rim. In-the-firing mottling to surface. A minor rim chip. H 10 1/2".
