Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Dated 1867, Stamped "PRUDEN & OLCOTT. / 185 DUANE-ST-NY," 1867, semi-ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, brush-decorated with two clusters of grapes hanging from a leafy stem above the large date, "1867." Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Made during a brief partnership between Elizabeth, NJ potter, J.M. Pruden, and a New York City merchant, Augustus Olcott. One of only a small number of pieces bearing this stamp that we have offered, its rare decoration and date easily making it the finest among them. An old 3/8" filled hole at base. Long, in-the-firing lines at base, which are partially glazed over. Spout chips. Two minor base nicks. Minor in-the-firing surface flaws and minor residue from use to surface. A recessed in-the-firing contact mark to jug's proper right side. H 15".
