Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Cream Pitcher, Edgefield District, SC origin, second or early third quarter 19th century, bulbous pitcher with footed base, tall, flaring collar, and delicate rounded handle, the surface covered in a mottled, olive-colored alkaline glaze over buff clay. Literature: Illustrated in Smith, "Pottersville Museum- The Result of McClendon Serendipity" from Sandlapper: The Magazine of South Carolina, April 1970, p. 11. (Issue included with lot.) Provenance: Purchased by the Wards at Harmer Rooke Galleries, New York, NY, Absentee Auction 66, The Pottersville Museum Collection, March 25, 1995, lot 42; includes Harmer Rooke sticker on underside. Shallow chipping/roughness to spout and some of rim. Otherwise excellent condition. H 4 1/2".
