Fine Large-Sized Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Kaolin Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER / MAKER," Thomas Chandler Pottery, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, ovoid jar with narrow, semi-rounded mouth and large arched-tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse in slip-trailed kaolin slip with a scalloped drape and looping line motifs. Additional looping line motif below each handle. Gray-green, alkaline-glazed ground with thick, bluish-gray runs descending from the upper body. Excellent size, measuring approximately eight to ten gallons. A 6 1/4" line on underside, continuing 8" up body of jar on reverse. One handle with a 2 1/16" flake and small in-the-firing ping. Opposing handle with a small chip. H 19".
