Fine Manganese-Glazed Redware Jar, probably Greene County, TN, circa 1820-1860, ovoid jar with narrow base, tooled shoulder, tall collar with semi-squared rim, and ribbed open-strap handles with depressed terminals. Exterior surface covered in a blackish lead-and-manganese glaze. Interior surface covered in a clear lead glaze over orange ground. Excellent potting. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Literature: Illustrated in Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Part One, p. 51, fig. 42. p. 173, pl. 23, and p. 195, fig. 42. Provenance: Originally purchased by Mary Jo Case in Jonesborough, TN in the 1970s; Purchased by Wahler from Marcus King in 2011. Strong condition with rim and base chips as well as a small in-the-firing ping to midsection on one side. H 8 1/4".
