Glazed Redware Jar with Lid, Inscribed "25," probably Carter County, TN, circa 1840-1880, ovoid jar with footed base, flaring collar with semi-rounded rim, and incised straight and wavy line incising to the shoulder, the surface covered in a clear lead glaze over a mottled reddish ground with orange spotting. Incised "25" at shoulder. Includes lead-glazed lid, possibly original to the jar. Exhibited: Legacy in Clay: The Pottery of Washington County, Virginia, July 22 - November 20, 2005. Literature: Illustrated in Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Part One, p. 37, fig. 25, p.. 171, pl. 21, p. 192, fig. 25. Provenance: Originally found in Bristol, Virginia. An approximately 1" hole in underside, leading to a larger flake on interior base. A few small base chips. Some light wear to rim and inner rim for lid. Lid broken into two pieces and reglued with two small edge chips. H (excluding lid) 7 7/8".
