Minimum Bid: $200.

An estimate is an expected selling price for an item at auction. Unlike almost every major auction house in the country, we handle our own shipping in-house. We understand how frustrating it can be to have to work with third-party shippers to have your objects delivered to you. Meanwhile, we also understand how important it is for you to receive your objects safely. We have over 40 years of experience safely packing antique ceramics. By default your invoice will include a shipping total via UPS Ground; you can also, of course, pick up objects at our gallery. Please feel free to contact us if you would like a quote. (A very few lots will have notes at the end of their descriptions letting you know that the object is too big or fragile for us to handle shipping ourselves.)

Very Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Coggled Decoration, Stamped "B.A. LAWSON 1872," probably Grindstaff Pottery, Blount County, TN, 1872, cylindrical jar with arched lug handles and tapered rim with coggled dentile treatment, the surface covered in a salt glaze over brownish slip, producing a green "frogskin" coloration. Midsection impressed with the maker's mark and date, "B.A. LAWSON 1872." Incised above with the notation, "2 / 2." Closely related in form, glaze, and coggling, to pieces bearing the mark, "W. GRINSTAFF," this exceptionally rare jar was likely marked by potter, B.A. Lawson, while working at the William Grinstaff pottery. Literature: For other pieces by Lawson, see Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1800, Part One, p. 30, figs. 14 and 15, and p. 190, figs. 14 and 15. Very nice condition. A small in-the-firing flake to proper right handle. Some wear to rim. Minor chipping around bottom edge. A faint 1 1/2" line in underside. H 10 3/4".
