Rare and Fine Glazed Redware Jar with Manganese Slash Decoration, attributed to the Cain Pottery, Sullivan County, TN, circa 1840-1870, ovoid jar with footed base, flaring rim, and ribbed open-strap handles with depressed terminals, the shoulder embellished with straight and wavy incised combing. Decorated throughout with diagonally-brushed slashes of manganese slip, two large spots of manganese slip under one handle, and manganese highlights to the handle terminals, all under a clear lead glaze. Provenance: Purchased by Wahler from Marcus King circa 1998. Literature: For a closely-related jar, see Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Part One, p. 137, fig. 146, p. 216, fig. 146. Very nice condition, particularly for pieces of this origin. Some shallow chipping to rim. Some mostly-small flakes and in-the-firing pings to surface, mostly relegated to the base area. Some extremely minor wear to handles. Chips to foot. H 9 1/4".
