Rare Glazed Redware Jar with Open Handles, Southwestern VA or Eastern TN origin, second or third quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with flared rim, and large rounded-loop handles, the shoulder decorated with an incised wavy line flanked on each side by three horizontal lines. Surface covered in an unusual lead-based glaze with mottled reddish-brown coloration, tinted with iron or manganese. Clear lead glaze to interior. Provenance: Originally found in Abingdon, VA. A 2" loss to rim. Two smaller rim chips. A thin curving crack from rim to midsection on one side. A thin 2" crack from rim on opposing side. A significant section of glaze loss to base area. Additional in-the-firing spalling / post-firing wear to glaze on body of jar. Wear to rim and handles. Base chips. A flake to underside. Flaking to interior. H 12 1/4"
