Rare Glazed Stoneware Torso Jug, AL origin, late 19th century, wheel-thrown, double-lobed form with cylindrical spout and applied handle on reverse, the upper section decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face including scrolled ears, eyes with applied broken china pieces, incised eyebrows, nose with carved nostrils, and open mouth with broken-china teeth. A pronounced, dimpled chin below the mouth is accented with a diamond-shaped piece of broken china. Surface covered in a mottled brown glaze with traces of old red paint. Exceptional folk art form showcasing the distinctive torso shape and applied china pieces commonly associated with Alabama face vessel production. A professionally-restored wedge missing from spout. Two shallow, unrestored spout chips. Two chips to proper left ear. Loss to one tooth, possibly in-the-making, adjacent to a minor in-the-firing chip to lower lip. H 11 3/4".
