Rare Four-Handled Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Catawba Valley, NC origin, second half 19th century, large-sized, ovoid jar with flaring collar and four arched-lug handles, decorated around the shoulder and midsection with wavy incised combing between two horizontal incised lines. Surface covered in a mottled olive-brown alkaline glaze. Jar measures roughly seven gallons. Exceptional form. Provenance: The Griffin Collection; Purchased from Phil Wingard. Professional restoration to an approximately 6" x 1" curved section of rim. Minor chipping to rim. Small chips to inner rim for lid. Heavy exfoliation to interior. A small in-the-firing ping to underside. H 19".
