Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Impressed Cardinal Motif, Stamped "W. GRINSTAFF," Blount County, TN origin, circa 1870-1890, semi-ovoid jar with tooled accents to upper body, coved and flattened molding, and grooved lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed design of a cardinal with turned head, perched on a branch with berries. Impressed at midsection with William Grindstaff maker's mark above a raised-face two-gallon capacity mark. In her notes, Wahler describes this jar with the following: "This is the only known Grindstaff piece with this particular impressed decoration. . . One other impressed design is known." Provenance: Ex-Namuni Hale Young. Excellent condition with some chipping to bottom edge. H 12".
