Very Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Pitcher with Freehand Iron-Slip Floral Decoration, attributed to the Whelchel Family, Gaffney, SC area, late 19th century, ovoid pitcher with flaring collar and wide, subtly-formed spout, iron-slip-decorated with an abstract brushed design of a flower blossom with spotted, jagged-edged petals against a grayish alkaline-glazed ground. The Whelchels various iron-slip designs were almost solely applied using a stencil, and this pitcher is the first example of their work that we have offered displaying a design that was applied with a brush. Four chips to rim/spout area and additional rim and spout wear. An unglazed in-the-firing contact mark to proper left side. H 10".
