Scarce Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed to George U. Fletcher, Miles Mill, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1900, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, arched lug handles, and narrow collar with flattened rim, the surface covered in a mottled rust-to-olive alkaline glaze. Incised "5" at shoulder. Literature: A closely-related jar is illustrated in Baldwin, Great and Noble Jar, p. 110, fig. 4.18. Rim chips. Chipping to inner rim for lid. Heavy chipping to proper right handle. Shallower chipping to proper left handle. An in-the-firing contact mark below right handle. A thin firing crack to surface of underside, not visible on interior. H 17".
