Rare Large-Sized Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Kaolin Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER / MAKER," Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, finely-potted, ovoid jar with thin, semi-rounded rim and large arched-tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with kaolin-slip drape and looping line motifs, as well as below each handle with additional looping lines. Gray-green alkaline-glazed ground with bluish runs descending from the shoulder. Exceptional size, measuring approximately eight to ten gallons. A large, thin sealed Y-shaped crack to shoulder on unmarked side one side. This crack extends above the jar's proper left handle onto the front where it forms a very large inverted, sealed Y extending across the front, part of which ends on the jar's proper right side.
