Exceptional Small-Sized Stoneware Jug with Profuse Stripe-and-Spot Decoration, attributed to the Decker Pottery, Washington County, TN, circa 1872-1910, ovoid jug with narrow tapered spout and ribbed handle, brush-decorated throughout with alternating rows of stripes and spots. Large tulip surrounding the base of the handle. Heavy cobalt highlights to handle. An iconic example of Decker stoneware and one of this pottery's most heavily-decorated works known. Exhibited: Made in East Tennessee: Pottery, Museum of East Tennessee History, 1996; Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Literature: Illustrated in Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Part One, p. 156, fig. 172, p. 176, pl. 26, and p. 222, fig. 172. Provenance: In her notes, Wahler says the following about this jug: "I bought this jug and a Dickerson jug from Luke Morgan at an early Heart of Country." Excellent, essentially as-made condition.
