Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Sunflower Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, highly-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with an exuberant slip-trailed design of a stem bearing leaves and seven heavily-shaded sunflower blossoms. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A combination of desirable factors, including the decorative quality of the design, rare slip-trailed treatment, large size of the vessel, and color of the jug, produce one of the finer Cowden & Wilcox floral-decorated pieces that we have ever offered. Provenance: Recently found in a Northumberland County, PA home. A 1 1/2" x 7/8" flake to side of spout. A 1 3/8" in-the-firing flake to top of handle. A small in-the-firing contact mark near base. Some light staining. H 18".
