Fine Twelve-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with incised banding to midsection, tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with a large undulating, flowering vine extending across the shoulder, between a series of straight and wavy freehand stripes. Further decorated below with a second flowering vine, underscored by a freehand stripe and additional vining. Base inscribed with a scrolled "12," flanked by freehand stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent size and striking top-to-bottom decoration in the Western Pennsylvania style. A tight, approximately 10" inverted Y-shaped line descending from shoulder to midsection on reverse. An approximately 7" thin crack at bottom edge, forming a T that extends 2 1/4" onto underside. Front base with a small in-the-firing bloated spot and some gritty in-the-firing residue. Some minor surface wear and significant staining, primarily visible on reverse. Remarkably no chips. H 20 1/2".
