Large-Sized Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware with Iron-Slip Floral Decoration, attributed to Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, rotund jar with semi-rounded rim and arched tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a large "broken stem" floral motif in slip-trailed iron slip against a gray-green alkaline-glazed ground. Jar measures approximately six gallons. Desirable size, bold potting, and strong decoration. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. One side with an approximately 3" hairline from rim and some faint surface-level lines to shoulder, the latter not visible on interior. A 3 1/4" crack on underside, extending to shoulder, including a 2 1/4" line and a 1 1/2" line extending off from it and two minor nicks along crack. A thin 2 1/2" line from rim on opposing side. Some traces of old white paint on underside of one handle. H 16".
