Fine Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Impressed X, attributed to the Landrum Family Potteries, Columbia or Edgefield District, SC, probably Abner Landrum Pottery, Columbia, SC, circa 1835, highly-ovoid jug with narrow base, dramatically-swelled shoulder, and tooled spout, the surface coated in a dense, opaque alkaline glaze with cream-green to yellowish coloration. Base of handle impressed with small cross stamp. This mark differs from the typical "Landrum cross" in that it is not raised-face or surrounded by a circle. A beautifully glazed and potted example of early South Carolina stoneware, its distinctive coloration suggesting it may be a rare product from the first years of Abner Landrum's Columbia pottery. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. Excellent condition with some minor chips to bottom edge and some short lines at the base, which appear to be in-the-firing. H 13".
