Rare Five-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Alkaline Glaze, Edgefield District, SC origin, second quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and open strap handles applied at the shoulder, the surface covered in a streaky, olive-colored alkaline glaze. Incised "5" at shoulder. Exceptional form. Relatively few Edgefield jars of this larger size were made with open handles. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. A thin 6" crack from rim beside proper left handle. A thin, curving surface crack extending 5" across underside and continuing onto base where it forms a long, thin horizontal surface crack, none of which is visible on interior. Some additional, surface-level lines in glaze only, not visible on interior. A 1 3/4" x 3/4" in-the-firing flake to proper right side of jar. Some in-the-firing horizontal lines to interior of collar, not visible on exterior. H 14 1/2".
