Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "Lm," David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, ovoid jar with arched lug handles and semi-squared rim with inner flange for lid, the surface covered in an olive-green alkaline glaze with darker runs descending from the shoulder and iron flecking throughout. Vertically incised with the script initials, "Lm," at the shoulder along with three incised punctates denoting three gallons and two slash marks, a hallmark of David Drake. Classic Drake form and unusually fine condition. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. Excellent condition with a minor chip to interior of rim. H 13".
