Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Cake Crock with Lid, Both Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, wide, cylindrical form with squared rim and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with swag motifs on the front and reverse and highlights to the handle terminals, applied over a slip-coated ground. Impressed with John Bell maker's mark at shoulder. Includes lid with swag decoration, loose fitting, but possibly original to the crock, impressed with John Bell maker's mark on underside. Crock with a long horizontal crack near base, a few small rim chips, residue to surface, and some in-the-firing discoloration. Lid with spalling to cobalt, chips to knob, a small rim chip on underside, and chipping to flange on underside. H (including lid) 6" ; Diam (of lid) 7 1/2".
