Glazed Redware Butter Tub, Stamped "JOHN BELL," Waynesboro, PA origin, circa 1840-1880, wide, cylindrical form with tooled body and semi-rounded rim fitted with molded and incised ropetwist handles, the underside with three molded and applied feet, the lead-glazed surface decorated with heavily-sponged manganese on the exterior and handles. Impressed with John Bell maker's mark below one handle. A 1 1/16" base chip. A small surface chip near base. Underside with some tight, glazed-over surface fissures, not visible on interior. A 2 3/4" in-the-firing contact mark to rim. Two minuscule glaze nicks to one handle. Diam. 7 7/8" ; H (to top of handles) 6".
