Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1860, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head and long tail, perched on a tree stump atop a shrubbed ground. Decoration stands an impressive 12 1/4" tall and is executed in bold cobalt against a light clay ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity. A striking example of an iconic Norton motif. Includes a Northeastern Albany-slip-glazed lid stamped, "4." Very nice condition. A thin 3 1/4" crack from rim on front. Small chips to inner rim for lid. Two small chips to interior of rim. Two minor, in-the-firing pings to pheasant's tail. Some traces of old white paint to reverse, unrelated to any sort of restoration. Lid with small chips and a thin 2 3/4" crack. H (excluding lid) 17".
