Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Syrup Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, squat-shaped, ovoid jug with flared and pinched pouring spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The first bird-decorated Norton syrup jug that we have offered, this work features a somewhat larger rendering of their well-known bird-on-branch motif and features excellent color. Two chips to interior of rim, measuring 1 1/8" and 1". Otherwise excellent condition with a minuscule nick below bird, staining to bottom edge, and some minor, old paint residue. H 13 1/4".
