Scarce and Fine Three-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Deer and House Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head and spotted body, reclining atop a hill. The background features a pine tree and a large mansion with a door, eight windows, and circular dormer, the foreground decorated with a split-rail fence. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes a fitting salt-glazed lid, slightly small, but possibly original to the jar. A good example of classic decoration by German immigrant, John Hilfinger (1826-1888), featuring a number of desirable design elements, crisp slip-trailing, and strong color. Jar with heavy, but shallow, chipping and wear around inner rim for lid, some additional shallow chipping along underside at jar's bottom edge, and some light staining. Lid with a small chip to knob and some staining. H (excluding lid) 13 1/2".
