Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Swan on Nest Decoration, Stamped "JULIUS NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1845, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with slip-trailed design of a swan with craning neck and raised wing, seated on a stylized nest. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The first example of Norton stoneware featuring this design that we have ever offered, this work is a rare example of pre-Hilfinger slip-trailed figural decoration from Bennington. Very nice condition. A small spout chip on reverse. A minor nick to front of spout. A smooth in-the-firing contact mark to left side of jug, including a minor piece of adhered clay. A minor in-the-firing surface chip to proper right side and handle. Minor surface wear. H 14 1/4".
