Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird on Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with turned head and long tail, perched on a tree stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Desirable decoration and vessel size. A glazed-over iron ping to proper left side of jug. A few chips to underside along bottom edge. Some light staining. Two small, faint Y-shaped surface lines to reverse. A faint 5" vertical surface line to reverse. A small iron inclusion at base. H 11 1/2".
