Fine Stoneware Jug with Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, probably Crolius Family, circa 1795, highly-ovoid jug with footed base and heavily-tooled spout, decorated at the shoulder with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of leaves and fan-shaped flowers emanating from an impressed asterisk. A brushed cobalt stripe extends completely around the shoulder. Additional cobalt highlights appear at the handle terminals. A wonderfully potted and decorated example of early Manhattan stoneware, exhibiting excellent color. Most likely made by a member of the Crolius family around the time of Thomas Commeraw's emergence as an independent potter at Corlears Hook, this work features floral motifs related to those found on Commeraw's earliest signed work. Base chips. A 2" glazed-over line to neck. Some in-the-firing residue to shoulder. H 14".
